What we understand by the meaning of Literature is absolutely wrong. According to common literature is studying the novels, dramas , poems written by the authors around the world. But literature is not only reading the author’s different books, rather you also have the information about the historic scenario that was there when the author was writing book. As well as what was the mood of author when he was writing the book. Literature gives you an insight of the world’s situation.
If we take an example of the Jane Austen’s novel Pride and Prejudice it’s not about only Mrs. Bennet worried about the marriage of their daughters or love relation between Elizabeth and Darcy or Mr. Bingley and Jane, but it also deals with the property rights of women or the ways of entertainment. If we take an instance of English literature, we study Anglo-Saxon England to the literature of the 20th and early 21st centuries. In English literature, we also study the views of philosophers like Antonio Gramsci, Louis Althusser, Edward Said, Mahatma Gandhi etc. In the study of Marxism, we study that everyone is intellectual and a person is a subject even before he or she comes in the world, which means that everyone is a subject . Edward said criticizes the idea how people from west called themselves “Occident s” and termed people from east “Orient s”. By the study of this essay, we get an idea that how Europeans have always discriminated Africans, Asians and middle eastern countries as exotic. And how they were and are still traumatized.
After reading literature you get a voice to raise. You can feel the suppression that society is going through. Then you can actively take part to reform the country or world. Especially when you read feminism, you understand the frightful condition of women and how they are treated. We need to raise our voice against several issues that we see.
Literature is something that teaches you a lot. After studying literature you become a totally different person with different views, or we should say you are a transformed personality.
